DS8880:
All using Safeguarded Copy, with Extent Space Efficient (ESE) Safeguarded source volumes

Abstract

While Safeguarded Copy backup is in progress, an LPAR error handling event may cause undetected loss of data on a Safeguarded ESE source volume.

Description

When performing a Safeguarded Copy backup, a very small (tens of milliseconds) window of time exists wherein an error handling event (warmstart or sudden LPAR failover) may cause a validation process to take an incorrect path, leading to a loss of the Safeguarded ESE Source volume data.

If the Safeguarded ESE Source Volume is CKD, the data loss will be detected as an invalid track format.
If the Safeguarded ESE Source Volume is Fixed Block, the data loss may go undetected.
