Error description

  • SQL backup sometimes reports "Failed to enable log backup" in a
    SQL Server AlwaysOn environment
    
    
    Problem Description:
    In a SQL Server AlwaysOn environment, SQL databases sometimes
    reports "Failed to enable log backup":
    
    
    CTGGA2081,Failed to enable log backup for <SQL-AG-Name> ==>
    <SQL-DB-Name> [ Last run for database [SP_Social] failed.]
    
    
    The backup preferences is set on the AG level. The log backup
    is successful on one node, while fails on another non-backup
    node. The command.log shows following error:

    [date time] Debug 3848 Thread-1 agent_sql_log: Result of DB:
    [SQL-DB-Name]; [FAILURE]
    
    
    The t-sql returns exception when trying to determine preferred
    replica on non-backup node.

Problem conclusion

  • This problem has been fixed so that SQL log backup of alwayson
    databases can be completed successfully, as long as SQL T-SQL
    query "sys.fn_hadr_backup_is_preferred_replica" returns correct
    output.
