Error description

  • After IBM Storage Protect Plus appliance reboot, if many jobs
are starting at the same time, backups can fail with :

INFO,...,CTGGA2406,There are no active storage streams all
active vms are in initial stage or waiting for available
    streams.

The jobs are hung waiting to open the VM guests disks, this uses
up all VADP streams available for backups.

Problem conclusion

  • Before IBM Spectrum Protect Plus level 10.1.15, when the opening
of a VMware Virtual Machine Disk format (VMDK) disk hung
indefinitely, the backup of the corresponding VM would wait
until a timeout was reached by the backup job (typically two
hours after the hang started). This would cause a VADP stream to
be held by the stuck VM backup, starving other jobs of VADP
streams and causing failure messages of the form, "There are no
active storage streams all active vms are in initial stage or
waiting for available streams." Since 10.1.15, a more localized
timeout has been added to the VADP service, causing the disk
open call to unblock within 10 minutes if the call hangs,
freeing up the VADP stream much sooner and unblocking the backup
    of other VMs.
