Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

Configuration information for the IBM TS1170 (0359270F) tape drive and associated tape media

Content

NOTE:
Beginning with version 8.1.20, IBM Spectrum Protect™ is now IBM Storage Protect™.  To learn more about the brand change, see IBM Spectrum Protect brand change to IBM Storage Protect.

For IBM TS1170 drive support information in a library, consult the technote pertaining to the perspective library
IBM TS1170 Model 70F with Fibre Channel interface is supported.
IBM TS1170 Model 70S with SAS interface is supported on Linux & Windows.
IBM TS1170 drive is supported with the following features and formats:
  • IBM Spectrum Protect application-managed encryption
  • Logical Block Protection(LBP)
  • Append-only mode
Required Spectrum Protect versions:
  • IBM TS1170 drive support requires IBM Spectrum Protect version 8.1.18.0 or subsequent maintenance release.
  • Write Once Read Many (WORM) is not supported.

Device Class Information:
When defining a device class for the IBM TS1170, use the following values:
DEVType=3592
FORMAT=<DRIVE | 3592-7 | 3592-7C>
DRIVE - The server selects the highest format that is supported by the drive on which a volume is mounted.
3592-7 - Specifies that Spectrum Protect writes data that uses the 3592-7 recording format.
3592-7C - Specifies that Spectrum Protect writes data that uses the 3592-7C recording format with compression.

Examples:
DEFine DEVClass devclass_name LIBRary=library_name DEVType=3592 FORMAT=3592-7
DEFine DEVClass devclass_name LIBRary=library_name DEVType=3592 FORMAT=3592-7C

Generational Compatibility:
  • IBM TS1170 drive does not support previous generation 3592 cartridges, only 3592 Type F(JF) cartridge is supported.
  • Media written in TS1170 format is not readable by TS1160, TS1155, and TS1150 drives.
  • IBM TS1170 drive shouldn't be mixed with previous generation of 3592 drives within the same library partition.
Native Capacity:
IBM TS1170 Native Capacity with Associated 3592 Media
Cartridge
3592 Type F - JF
Native Capacity
50.0 TB
Tip: Compressed capacity is not estimated for the IBM TS1170 . Use the ESTCAPACITY parameter when you define or update the device class to tune the compressed capacity to match the actual data compression ratio.
IBM Device Driver:
The IBM device driver is required for the IBM TS1170 drive. IBM device drivers are available at  IBM Fix Central  . Choose the following options from the drop-down menus.
  • Product Group -> System Storage
  • System Storage -> Tape systems
  • Tape systems -> Tape drivers and software
  • Tape drivers and software -> Tape device drivers
  • Platform -> Select the platform for the device driver

IBM device driver level and firmware level requirements:
  • IBM AIX Atape driver 14.0.5.0 or newer
  • IBM Linux lin_tape driver 3.0.65 or newer
  • IBM Windows drivers 7.0.1.1 or newer
  • IBM TS1170 firmware rev 6431 or newer
Device identifications and firmware levels used during validation process:
(TS1170 Model 70F FC Drive: Validated with IBM Spectrum Protect Server 8.1.18)
  • Library ID: IBM 3584L22 --- Firmware: 1900
  • Drive ID: IBM 0359270F --- Firmware : 6431
(TS1170 Model 70S SAS Drive: Validated with IBM Spectrum Protect Server 8.1.18)
  • Library ID: IBM 03584L22 --- Firmware: 1900
  • Drive ID: IBM 0359270F --- Firmware: 6431
