Error description

  • Migration of IBM MQ Appliance HA queue manager from MQ 9.2 to
9.3 fails if the queue manager has been manually stopped before.
High availability queue managers are reported as 'already
migrated' when running 'sethagrp - u {QMGR}' but no HA queue
managers could be started on the upgraded appliance.

Local fix

  • When updating an appliance ensure all HA queue managers are
running on the target appliance's HA partner appliance

Problem summary

    9.2 to 9.3.

    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Migration of queue managers with a High Availability (HA)
configuration failed when a queue manager was manually stopped
before the firmware upgrade to 9.3 from 9.2.
When a HA queue manager is stopped before upgrading, an internal
attribute which manages the state of resource is set to false,
which affects the order constraints (rules) that the appliance
follows to start an HA queue manager's resources. This caused
the migration process to fail, and therefore the HA components
initialization, as it did not update an internal metadata file.
With no metadata file available, HA resources appeared as
    unavailable.

Problem conclusion

  • MQ migration process has been modified to check if the high
availability queue manager was stopped manually prior to
starting the queue manager's HA resources.
