How to collect the Instana Agent DEBUG logs

How To

Summary

If you have an issue on the agent side, there are several options for how to collect the agent debug logs for the Instana team for further investigation.

Objective

Follow the steps to gather the Agent DEBUG logs that capture most details for diagnosis and then default INFO logs:

  • Stop the agent (<instana_install_dir>/bin/stop.sh)
  • Wipe the logs (delete all files in <instana_install_dir>/data/logs)
  • Set log level to DEBUG (change the severity in the configuration file, follow the instructions here https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/instana-observability/current?topic=agents-configuring-host#agent-logging
  • Start the agent (<instana_install_dir>/bin/start.sh)
  • Reproduce the issue and after ~15 minutes zip up the logs (in <instana_install_dir>/data/logs) and post the zip file with the support case.

NOTE: In case the agent is not active and for some reason, you don't want or can not start the agent again, you can collect all collected data at <instana_install_dir>/data/logs.
After that, zip up this directory and post the zip file to the support case.
