IBM Support

Handling of supporting programs in License Metric Tool

News

Abstract

Starting from application update 9.2.32, the approach to how supporting programs contribute to license usage of their parent products changes in accordance with license information documents.

Overview
License terms of multiple IBM products state that when a supporting program is installed on a different computer than its parent product, it should contribute to license usage of the parent product.
For License Metric Tool application updates lower than 9.2.32, proper reporting of license usage for such products was difficult. It required creating custom bundling relations, which was not a preferred approach for multiple customers. Such approach was necessary because supporting programs did not contribute to license usage.
Starting from application update 9.2.32, classification options are modified for product versions that clearly specify the need to license remote supporting programs in their license information documents. As an example, the following license statement triggers this change in License Metric Tool for the corresponding product version:
Licensee must obtain sufficient entitlements to the Program, as a whole, to cover Licensee's installation and use of all of the Supporting Programs, unless separate entitlements are provided within this License Information document. For example, if this Program were licensed on a VPC (Virtual Processor Core) basis and Licensee were to install the Principal Program or a Supporting Program on a 10 VPC machine and another Supporting Program on a second 10 VPC machine, Licensee would be required to obtain 20 VPC entitlements to the Program.
Impact of the change
After you upgrade License Metric Tool to application update 9.2.32 or higher, you might observe an increase in license usage for some products. It is the case when a supporting program is installed on a computer other than its parent product, which is in line with the licensing terms. If the supporting program is installed on the same computer or partition as the parent product, it does not increase the PVU or VPC license usage.
Action required
Review the classification of discovered components and adjust it whenever needed to align with product license terms. To reference license information document for a specific product version, click here.

If a specific supporting program should be classified differently, reassign it. If you do not see the required classification option, upgrade the License Metric Tool server to application update 9.2.32 or higher as it introduces new classification options for multiple products.
If a supporting program should not contribute to license usage calculation (for example, if it is listed in the license as a component that is not used for establishing required entitlements), but License Metric Tool does not provide such an option, exclude the supporting program in License Metric Tool and provide an appropriate comment.
