IBM Cloud Pak System - OpenShift Container Platform Pattern version 4.10.0.0 deployment fails with Error - The registration with Red Hat satellite service failed

Troubleshooting


Problem

OpenShift Container Platform Pattern version 4.10.0.0 deployment fails and results in the Virtual System Pattern Instance being in an ERROR state.

Symptom

The following message is reported in the History section of the failed deployment:

Error: The registration with Red Hat satellite service failed

Cause

There are 2 main causes, which can result in the symptom:
1) A satellite server is not set up or incorrectly configured 
2) The required satellite repositories for OpenShift Container Platform Pattern version 4.10.0.0 are not enabled 

Diagnosing The Problem

Download the VM logs:

Navigate to Patterns > Pattern Instances > Virtual System Instances

Click the applicable "Virtual Systems" instance 

Click "Manage" 

Click "logging" tab 

Click "Download All"

1) A satellite server is not set up or incorrectly configured 
 

Check the primary helper node's RHUSClient middleware role trace.log:

(Example) log path and trace entries to confirm registration completed...

If you do NOT see message: DEBUG The system is registered with satellite service, the client did not register with a satellite server.  Proceed to "Resolving The Problem" section of this document.  Otherwise, proceed to check for item 2) 

2) The required satellite repositories for OpenShift Container Platform Pattern version 4.10.0.0 are not enabled

Check the ocp-helper standard.out log

 (Example) log path and trace entries to check for missing repositories...

Error: ansible-2.9-for-rhel-8-x86_64-rpms does not match a valid repository ID. Use the "subscription-manager repos --list" option to see the valid repositories.

 In this example, the repository ansible-2.9-for-rhel-8-x86_64-rpms was not enabled on the satellite server. Proceed to "Resolving The Problem" section of this document.

Resolving The Problem

1) For satellite server not set up or to check for configuration problems, review the following instructional document pertaining to setting up a satellite server environment on IBM Cloud Pak System

2) For satellite repository requirements, see system requirements page for list of required repositories, which must be enabled on the satellite server
When the problem is resolved, redeploy the OpenShift Container Platform Pattern version 4.10.0.0
