Disruptive Firmware Update / Upgrade using Enhanced HMC(V8.8.1to V9 R2).
If the system is OPSYS managed or HMC concurrent update.

Environment
Steps
Requirements:
- GO SAVE: Option 21 (saving the entire system) (Recommended)
- HMC V8R1, V9R1 or V9R2
- IBMi QSECOFR level ID and password
- System on Temporary side
- UAK Not Expired before release date of firmware
Pre-readiness check
Check HMC Readiness for Firmware upgrade
From the HMC,
- Select the “System” to upgrade
- Select “Actions”
- Select “Updates”
- Select “View system Information”
- Specify LIC Repository
- "IBM Service web site"
- Click "OK"
- It will take a few minutes before returning results
- "IBM Service web site"
- The screen should show the "Current LIC repository location: IBM service web site
- Click on "Close"
- Your system is ready for the firmware update / upgrade
- Resources → All Partitions.
- Select the "Partition" to shut down
- Shutting down one Partition down at a time is recommended.
- Select the “Action” button drop down
- Select “Shutdown”
- Shutdown options, select “Operating System or Operating System Immediate”
- Select "OK”
Confirmation screen will appear, select “Yes” to continue
The partition(s) begin to Shut down.
***Wait for all Partitions' State to shows “Not Available or Not Activated” before continuing.***
SERVER POWER OFF
- Resources → “All Systems”
- Select the “System” to upgrade
- Select “Actions”
- Select “View All Actions”
- Select “Power Off”
- If you receive a messages that there are partitions running.

Would you like to continue powering off the system without shutting down the running partitions first?

Select "NO"

Go back and shut down any remaining partition on the selected System.

Select “Normal power off”

Select “OK”
Wait for the server to completely power off before continuing.
Disruptive Firmware Update or Upgrade
With Readiness confirmed.
Partitions are shut down
System is powered off
- Select the “System” to update/upgrade
- Select “Actions”
- Select:" Updates >> Change License Internal Code>"
- Select "for the Current Release" for update
- Select "for the New Release" for upgrade
"Welcome to the Change Licensed Internal Code wizard" screen
Select "Next"
If doing an Update and the following screen appears,
Continuing with Update
Click on "Finish" and follow any prompts.
Continue to "Power on Server" section
Upgrade or Run Release Upgrade Now
Select the version you are Upgrading to.
Click "OK" and follow and prompts.
Continue to "Power on Server" section
Power on server
Select the “System” to upgrade
- Select “Actions”
- Select “View All Actions >> Power On”
- Power on options, select “Normal”
- Select “OK”
The system begins to power on.
The System Status and Reference Code will show you the server status.
Some codes remain on the screen longer than others. As an example, C1472000.
Wait for System State to show “Operating or Standby”.
Proceed to activate the partitions.
***Depending on the Power On values, the partitions may automatically power up when the server powers up***
Select the partition to activate by clicking on the check box of the partition
- Select “Actions”
- Select “Activate.”
- Expand and verify the “Advanced Setting”
- Keylock Position is in “Normal”
- IPL Type should be “B: IPL from second side of the…”
- Select “Finish” to continue…
- Expand and verify the “Advanced Setting”
Confirmation message will be displayed once activation completed.
Activate the remaining partitions.
Verify firmware
On the green screen command line:
- Run DSPFMWSTS
- *Active and *Temp should be on upgraded firmware level
On HMC
- Select “System” to verify
- Select “Actions”
- Select “Updates >> View System Information."
- Select "None - Display current values"
- Click "OK"
- Verify installed, Active Levels
- Click on "Close"
