Using NFS to Mount Remote File Systems

Troubleshooting

Problem

The process for mounting a remote file system using NFS is described in this document.

Resolving The Problem

At V3R7, it is possible to mount files from other systems over IBM OS/400 directories, using NFS.

This assumes that TCP/IP is configured and running on the OS/400 system, and that the NFS server is configured on the remote machine.

To mount a remote file system over an OS/400 file system, on the OS/400 command line type the following:

ADDMFS TYPE(*NFS) MFS('remotesysname:/filesys') MNTOVRDIR('/ifsdir

where:
remotesysname is the name of the remote system
filesys is the name of the file system on the remote server
ifsdir is the name of Integrated File System directory to mount the foreign file system over

Press the Enter key.

Note: MOUNT also works in place of ADDMFS.

On your PC, configure TCP/IP and NFS SERVER (NFSD), and make the directory c:\nfs available for export. Mount this over a directory named after me on the OS/400 system. Therefore, the mount command looks similar to the following:

ADDMFS TYPE(*NFS) MFS('p839054:/nfs') MNTOVRDIR('/wfosler')

Note: In the directory name on the PC, the direction of the preceding slash should not matter. What is shown worked.

Now, you can serve up WWW pages that are actually stored on my PC from HTTP server on the OS/400. The OS/400 thinks they are stored locally in Integrated File System directory /wfosler.
