IT42287: FAILED BACKUP FOR FILESERVER BACKUP DUE TO CHOWN TIMEOUT

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• IBM Spectrum Protect Plus has an issue with setting the
  permission, it is taking too long with the command chown and
  causing a "command timed out" error.  It's failing with the
  error below
  
  
  ERROR, CTGGA3112,Failed to set up backup target volume: servi

  vsnap:vsnap '/vsnap/vpool1/fs8'"  type: "ShareUpdateError"
  

Local fix

• Increase the timeout for the chown command by changing the
  default setting for systemCmdTimeout from 8 minutes to 12
  miniutes (720 seconds) using this command:
  
  vsnap system pref set --name systemCmdTimeout --value 720

Problem conclusion

• Introduced a new vSnap preference named 'smbResetShareOwnership'
  to control whether the 'chown' command is invoked during share
  creation. By default, the ownership setting is still performed
  because it is necessary in many cases. However if it is observed
  to cause performance degradation then it can be disabled by
  setting the preference to 'false'.
