Error description

  • This is a request to have NUMCHECK(ZON(LAX)) ignore numeric to
    alphanumeric MOVEs. Note that a group data item is considered
    to be an alphanumeric data item, so in a numeric MOVE to a group
    data item, the sender's data would not be checked for validity
    under NUMCHECK(ZON(LAX)).

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.2 compiling and *
    * running programs compiled with the *
    *                 NUMCHECK(...,ZON(LAX)) option in effect and  *
    * where the programs contain a MOVE statement *
    * with a zoned decimal sender containing *
    * invalid data and an alphanumeric receiver. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Runtime abend or message due to *
    *                      NUMCHECK violation.                     *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the IBM-provided PTF.                  *
    ****************************************************************
    The NUMCHECK(...,ZON(LAX)) option is intended to provide more
    relaxed checking of zoned decimal senders where it is safe to do
    so. Since moving a zoned decimal data item to an alphanumeric
    data item is not a numeric operation, the checking should be
    relaxed when ZON(LAX) is in effect because such an operation is
    a common pattern in some user code (e.g., moving a zoned decimal
    data item initialized with LOW-VALUES to an alphanumeric
    receiver).

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was updated to avoid generating runtime checking
    code of zoned decimal senders in MOVE statements when the
    receiver is an alphanumeric data item and NUMCHECK(...,ZON(LAX))
    is in effect.
