IBM Spectrum Protect Plus: How to upgrade the vSnap server and IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server versions to 10.1.12 using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8

How To

Summary

This document describes how to upgrade the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server and vSnap server currently running version 10.1.10 to 10.1.12.

Objective

All existing virtual appliance deployments running 10.1.10 and earlier were built on the CentOS 7 operating system. To upgrade to 10.1.12, the existing CentOS 7 operating system must be migrated to new virtual appliances running Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 8). All server versions 10.1.9 must be updated to 10.1.10 or later before you upgrade to 10.1.12.

For the new installations beginning with 10.1.11 or later, the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server and vSnap server virtual appliances are built by using RHEL 8. As a result, no operating system migration is needed for the servers that are already running on RHEL 8.

Important: Beginning with 10.1.11 or later, the vSnap servers running on physical servers are supported only on RHEL 8.x.

Note: This upgrade procedure ONLY applies to users who have version 10.1.10 installed. This upgrade does not applies to users who have version 10.1.11 installed. If you are already at version 10.1.11 and want to upgrade to 10.1.12, then migration is not needed. Refer to upgrade instructions in the user guide. For more information about upgrade procedure, see Updating the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server - IBM Documentation.

Steps

Upgrade scenarios

Before you upgrade to 10.1.12, consider the following scenarios for upgrading an existing virtual appliance.

Important: For IBM Spectrum Protect Plus virtual appliance and the vSnap server environments that consist of a mix of systems such that some components must be migrated while others can be updated in-place, it is crucial to carefully review all the information in this document. It includes important requirements and restrictions, such as the order in which components must be migrated or updated.

Scenario 1: For existing IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server running versions 10.1.10 must be updated to 10.1.12, see the following table for the upgrade options.

Scenario Description
The IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server was deployed as a virtual appliance in VMware or Hyper-V. The server must be migrated to a new virtual appliance running in VMware or Hyper-V
The IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server was deployed as a set of containers. There is no need for migration. The containerized IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server can be updated by following this procedure, see Updating the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server - IBM Documentation

Scenario 2: For existing vSnap server version 10.1.10 must be updated to 10.1.12, see the following table for the upgrade options.

Scenario Description
The vSnap server was deployed as a virtual appliance in VMware or Hyper-V. The server must be migrated to a new virtual appliance running in VMware or Hyper-V
The vSnap server was installed on a physical server running a custom operating system. For servers running CentOS 7.x, RHEL 7.x, or CentOS 8.x, the server must be migrated to RHEL 8. x.
For servers running RHEL 8.x, do not require migration. The vSnap server can be updated by using .run file. For more information, see Updating a vSnap server - IBM Documentation

Scenario 3: For existing VADP proxy servers on version 10.1.10, see the following table for the upgrade options.

Scenario Description
The VADP proxy is installed on a stand-alone system. There is no need for migration. The VADP proxy is automatically updated when the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server is migrated or updated
The VADP proxy is installed on a vSnap server: There is no need for migration. The VADP proxy is automatically updated when the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server is migrated or updated.

Note: If the vSnap server is migrated, the VADP proxy is reinstalled on the new server after migration is complete.

Planning the update

When you are planning to update the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server and the vSnap server virtual appliances to 10.1.12, consider the following important requirements to complete the update process successfully.

Requirements

  1. To upgrade the vSnap server and IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server to 10.1.12, the server must be running version 10.1.10 before the upgrade.
  2. To protect VMware or Hyper-V virtual machine file catalog metadata of hypervisors that are eligible for file indexing and restore operations, the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server must be updated to version 10.1.10.2 before you update to 10.1.12. This update is required to address known APARs that affect catalog backup and restore of file metadata. If the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server is not updated to 10.1.10.2 before you update to 10.1.12, file catalog metadata might be lost during the migration process.
  3. All vSnap servers must be updated to 10.1.12 before the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server is updated to 10.1.12.
Note: The update procedure can be carried out gradually and in stages. For example, if several vSnap servers are registered in IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, they can be updated one by one over a period of several days, with a short amount of downtime scheduled for each migration. In the interim period, regular jobs and operations of all types can continue even though the environment is composed of an older IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server and a mix or older and newer vSnap servers.
  4. When you are planning to migrate the servers, you must save the hostnames, IP addresses, and operating system credentials for the future reference.

Managing updates

An IBM Spectrum Protect Plus environment includes the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server and optionally one or more vSnap servers and VADP proxies. Review the instructions to carefully plan and complete the update process.

The procedure to upgrade to version 10.1.12 differs based on the component. For more information, see the following pages.
