IJ41626: ABEND U4083 IN LIBZIP.SO INVOKED BY JAVA/UTIL/ZIP/CRC32.UPDATEBYTES() ON Z/OS 31-BIT

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Error Message: An intermittent segmentation fault may occur
  within the libzip.so library when trying to compute CRC-32
  checksum.  Language Environment will subsequently throw an ABEND
  U4083 with reason code 15 (X'0F').
  .
  Stack Trace: The segmentation fault will occur at +282 offset of
  the LEVGFM16 function in libzip.so.  The failing instruction is:
  VLM  %v5, %v8, 0(%r3).
  The Java stack at the point of failure will show:
  java/util/zip/CRC32.updateBytes(int, byte<OSB><CSB>, int, int)

Local fix

Problem summary

• The LEVGFM16 function in libzip.so, used to compute CRC-32
  checksum, incorrectly used 64-bit instructions to operate on
  32-bit buffer lengths and pointers.
  

Problem conclusion

• The implementation for CRC-32 has been updated to prevent the
  crash from occurring.
