Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL 6.3 compiling *
    * programs that contain CALL statements using *
    *                 a PROCEDURE-POINTER, where the pointer is    *
    * known to be NULL at runtime *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Compiler abend with message *
    *                      MSGIGYCB7104-U Internal error while     *
    * compiling function 'XXXXX'. Failed *
    *                      assertion on ./IBMRegister.hpp:94.      *
    *                      Compilation terminated.                 *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF *
    ****************************************************************
    The compiler wasn't detecting the case when a COBOL program was
    CALLing a PROCEDURE-POINTER that was known to be NULL at
    compile-time (such as a pointer that had a NULL value clause
    that was never overwritten elsewhere in the program). When the
    compiler attempted to generate code for the CALL statement, the
    compiler was not expecting the address of the procedure to be a
    constant value, and so the compiler abended.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler has been changed to instead issue a new message,
    IGYCB7319-S "The target FUNCTION-POINTER or PROCEDURE-POINTER
    in the CALL statement on line &1 is NULL.", alerting the user
    to the actual problem.
