Some services fail to restart due to Libvirtd certificate expiry in IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.3.0 or later

Troubleshooting

Problem

Due to the Libvirtd certificate expiry, the following services fail to restart in IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.3.0 or later:
  • Service49
  • Service54
  • Service78
The services display the following events upon failure:
  • Failed Offline
  • Offline

Symptom

Service49, Service54, or Service78 fail to restart in IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.3.0 or later.

Cause

The /etc/pki/vdsm/certs/vdsmcert.pem certificate is verified by Red Hat Virtualization Manager (RHV-M) to confirm the expiry date.
VDSM certificates expire after 398 days. This expiry duration is because the industry SSL standard certificate lifetime recently changed from five years to 398 days.

Diagnosing The Problem

If Platform System Manager (PSM) is not upgraded or rebuilt within 398 days, an event is displayed as follows for Service49, Service54, or Service78:
CWZIP9602E ServiceXX is failed offline at node <XXXXXX> and cannot be restarted

Resolving The Problem

Consider the following points:
  • Currently, auto-enrollment from Red Hat Virtualization Manager (RHV-M) is not possible on IBM Cloud Pak System.
  • IBM is working on a permanent solution to address auto-renewal on IBM Cloud Pak System.
  • If you experience service outages, open a case from the MySupport page to check for the expired Libvirtd certificate, and to help manually renew the certificates.
  • If you want IBM Support to proactively check the Libvirtd certificates before it expires, open a case from the MySupport page. For the case, search and select IBM Cloud Pak System and its firmware level on the system on the support page.
