APAR status

Error description

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus log bundle collection can fail to
    download and hang processing.
    This can happen when the appliance has a high memory usage when
    log collection is started which requires some additional memory
    resources to complete.
    When the memory resources limits are reached, the Linux Out of
    Memory monitor automatically will kill the process that uses
    the most memory.
    Often this will be the mongod service.
    When that happens, the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Database will
    not be accessible and therefore no further data protection,
    inventory, maintenance or other processing will be possible.
    Here is the type of message seen in /var/log/messages when a
    process is killed because of lack of system memory :
    <timestamp> <hostname> kernel: Out of memory: Kill process
                                   27806 (mongod) score 999 or
                                   sacrifice child

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus was modified to collect 7 days worth
    of progress information to reduce the size of the log
    collection.  This will result in a successful log collection
    without a timeout.
