Question & Answer
Question
Is it possible to migrate monitoring agent data from an ICAM 2020.x environment to a CP4MCM 2.3.x cluster?
Answer
At the time of this technote creation (see date on the right side), there is no reasonable upgrade/migration path from ICAM 2020.x to CP4MCM 2.3.x. If you had upgraded to CP4MCM 1.x, you would have had a path forward.
Basically, ICAM uses a helm-based install and CP4MCM is operator-based, and requires both OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) and RedHat Advanced Cluster Management (RHACM) from Red Hat. In addition, the underlying code for the Topology database, which holds the important data for upgrade, has changed significantly such that exporting the current ICAM topology database and importing it into CP4MCM will not work.
It would be far easier to simply perform a fresh install of CP4MCM with Monitoring and move the monitoring agents to the new environment. If you are using ICAM, ITM/ITCAM V6/V7 or APM V8 agents, they can all be easily reconfigured to communicate with CP4MCM 2.3.x Monitoring. Because of the helm to operator changes, and the data format changes in the Topology, migration by backup/restore is not an option.
