Amount of free space on the /var/log file system is critical

Troubleshooting


Problem

Deleted files are still associated with a running process, leading to disk space not being freed on the disk.

Symptom

The following events are raised with their problem description:
"CWZIP6238W The amount of free space on file system /var/log is low."
Older files will be deleted to provide more free space.
"CWZIP6239E The amount of free space on the /var/log file system is critical."
If the file system space reaches 100% capacity, multiple services on the Platform System Manager (PSM) go offline.

Cause

Leakage of the file descriptors.

Environment

W3500, W3550, and W4600 systems that are running on IBM Cloud Pak System 2.3.3.0 or later.
This information applies if you are running IBM Cloud Pak System Software by using RHEL 7.7.

Resolving The Problem

APAR IT41971 resolves this problem. Use My Support under Manage support account > Notifications to sign up for notifications on APAR and firmware availability.   
If you are an IBM Cloud Pak System Software client, your administrator can install the APAR fix from IBM Fix Central.
If you are an IBM Cloud Pak System client, IBM can install the same APAR fix on your system. Use My Support to contact IBM Support.
