IT40981: UNEXPECTED BACKUP OF FRESH VMWARE OVA INSTALLED 10.1.10 IBM SPECTRUM PROTECT PLUS VSNAP GUEST

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• An IBM Spectrum Protect Plus vSnap guest newly installed from a
  10.1.10 or later VMware Open Virtual Appliance (OVA)
  installation package is missing a guest option that excludes
  the vSnap from any backup.
  This is necessary because a VMware guest backup means that it
  is snapshotted, snapshots are which is not supported for vSnap
  Servers.
  The IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Appliance installed on VMware is
  not affected.

Local fix

• The vSnap guest can be excluded from accidental backups by
  using the vSphere UI to edit configuration.
  1. First power off the vSnap guest to make this change
  2. Go into "VM options", click "Advanced", click
     "Edit configuration" and then add the new setting :
     spp.vm.mode = "appliance"
  3. Power on the vSnap guest

Problem conclusion

• Due to a build error, the OVA did not contain an advanced
  configuration flag used for excluding virtual appliances from
  backup. The build error has been resolved. The fix takes effect
  for new OVAs deployed at the fixed level. For existing OVAs
  deployed at the older level, the flag must be added manually.
