How to take mksysb of client from NIM ?
Answer
This document will guide you through the steps of taking mksysb from client using NIM. In case you run into any problems during this operation please open new case with IBM Support Team for further investigation.
This topic will be covered in the following parts:
Taking mksysb of standalone type(regular lpar)
via command line:
# nim -o define -t mksysb -a mk_image=yes -a mksysb_flags=ip -a source=ClientA -a location=/full/path/to/store/the/ClientA_mksysb -a server=master ClientA_mksysb
# nim -o define -t mksysb -a mk_image=yes -a mksysb_flags=ip -a source=ClientA -a location=/full/path/to/store/the/ClientA_mksysb -a server=master ClientA_mksysb
for example:
# nim -o define -t mksysb -a mk_image=yes -a mksysb_flags=ip -a source=arrow -a location=/export/nim/mksysb/arrow.mksysb -a server=master arrow_mksysb
# nim -o define -t mksysb -a mk_image=yes -a mksysb_flags=ip -a source=arrow -a location=/export/nim/mksysb/arrow.mksysb -a server=master arrow_mksysb
via smit(example):
# smit nim_mkres - > Select mksysb -> On the following screen:
* Resource Name [arrow_mksysb]
* Resource Type mksysb
* Server of Resource [master]
* Location of Resource [/export/nim/mksysb/arrow.mksysb]
CREATE system backup image? no <--- change to yes
NIM CLIENT to backup [arrow] <--- Esc+4 or F4 and select the client which you want to backup or type it manually
Create backup using snapshots? yes <--- change to no
Disable software packing of backup? no <--- change to yes (This option disables the compression and reduces the chance of getting a corrupted mksysb)
# smit nim_mkres - > Select mksysb -> On the following screen:
* Resource Name [arrow_mksysb]
* Resource Type mksysb
* Server of Resource [master]
* Location of Resource [/export/nim/mksysb/arrow.mksysb]
Taking mksysb of management object(VIOS)
via command line:
# nim -o define -t ios_mksysb -a server=master -a location=/full/path/to/store/the/vios_ios_mksysb -a source=vioslpar -a mk_image=yes vioslpar_ios_mksysb
# nim -o define -t ios_mksysb -a server=master -a location=/full/path/to/store/the/vios_ios_mksysb -a source=vioslpar -a mk_image=yes vioslpar_ios_mksysb
for example:
# nim -o define -t ios_mksysb -a server=master -a location=/export/nim/ios_mksysb/vios1_ios_mksysb -a source=vios1 -a mk_image=yes vios1_ios_mksysb
# nim -o define -t ios_mksysb -a server=master -a location=/export/nim/ios_mksysb/vios1_ios_mksysb -a source=vios1 -a mk_image=yes vios1_ios_mksysb
via smit(example):
# smit nim_mkres -> Select ios_mksysb -> On the following screen:
* Resource Name [vios1_ios_mksysb]
* Resource Type ios_mksysb
* Server of Resource [master]
* Location of Resource [/export/nim/ios_mksysb/vios1_ios_mksysb]
CREATE system backup image? no <-- change to yes
NIM CLIENT to backup [vios1] <--- Esc+4 or F4 and select the client which you want to backup or type it manually
If you get a connection failed message, you will need to run the remote_management command on the vio server to establish a NIM connection between the NIM master and NIM client.
$ remote_management -interface <en#> <NIM Master name>
# smit nim_mkres -> Select ios_mksysb -> On the following screen:
* Resource Name [vios1_ios_mksysb]
* Resource Type ios_mksysb
* Server of Resource [master]
* Location of Resource [/export/nim/ios_mksysb/vios1_ios_mksysb]
