Problem
You see a new CWZIP8805W warning event raised on your IBM Cloud Pak System device and are unsure if this warning represents a problem that needs further investigation.
Symptom
A warning event is seen under the IBM Cloud Pak System Events page, or is reported by external monitoring tools, in the format:
CWZIP8805W The battery n in enclosure n on storage node xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx has changed to the offline state
Cause
The storage nodes in the IBM Cloud Pak System device periodically recondition the batteries to maintain their health. While this expected conditioning process is happening, the user interface shows the battery in an 'Unavailable' state.

Diagnosing The Problem
In the IBM Cloud Pak System user interface
- Go to System > Events
- Find and select the CWZIP8805W event to show the details in the pane to the right.
- Find the line labeled "Source" and click the link "storage controllers". The details of the storage node that reported the event are displayed.
- In the Storage Node details pane, find the row "Batteries". Expand that section to see the batteries for the Storage Node. One will show the 'Unavailable' state.
- Monitor the State of this battery for 24 hours.
- If the battery State changes to 'Available' after 24 hours, the CWZIP8805W event represents a normal, expected battery reconditioning event. If the status remains 'Unavailable' after 24 hours, see the steps in the "Resolving The Problem" section.
Resolving The Problem
If the battery's status does not return to 'Available' 24 hours after the CWZIP8805W was raised, use the guidance in the following technote to open a new case with IBM Support:
