Problem

Unable to start IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Service on Windows.

Symptom

  • IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Service fails to start using Windows Services
  • IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Service has been started via Windows Services, however the URLs do not work
  • Even though the IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Service is running, a javaw.exe process for the IBM Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Services is not present in Task Manager

Diagnosing The Problem

It's likely that an error has occurred during startup that is not clearly written to the \tm1web\wlp\usr\servers\tm1web\logs\tm1_messages.log file. 
To troubleshoot, follow the steps listed below to start Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Services in a console window that will help uncover additional granular details on startup.
  • Launch Command Prompt (as an Administrator)
  • Set JAVA_HOME environment variable to match the JRE that comes with Planning Analytics Spreadsheet Services <install_dir>\tm1web\jre
    • Example: set JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\ibm\cognos\tm1web\jre
  • Navigate to <install_dir>\tm1web\wlp\bin
  • Type: server run tm1web
  • Monitor the text in Command Line during the startup.  Errors will be reported on this screen
