Required Spectrum Protect versions:
IBM Ultrium 9 (LTO-9) drive support requires IBM Spectrum Protect version 8.1.12 or a subsequent maintenance release.
HPE StoreEver 4500 LTO-9 drive support requires IBM Spectrum Protect version 8.1.14.100 or a subsequent maintenance release.
Quantum LTO-9 drive support requires IBM Spectrum Protect version 8.1.14.100 or a subsequent maintenance release.
LTO-9 Media optimization
  • Media optimization is a new feature for the LTO9 tape drive with L9/LZ media.
  • Each new LTO-9 cartridge requires this one-time initialization prior to starting read/write operations.
  • The media optimization creates a referenced calibration for each cartridge that enables the tape drive’s intelligent alignment to optimize data placement. This optimization automatically happens on the first loading of a brand new LTO-9 tape into an LTO-9 tape drive and typically takes one hour, but it can range between 20 and 120 minutes before the tape is ready to be used for the first time.
LTO-9 drive is supported with the following features and formats:
  • IBM Spectrum Protect application-managed encryption
  • Logical Block Protection (LBP)
  • Append-only mode
Defining a device class:
When defining a device class for an LTO-9 drive, use the following values.
DEVType=LTO
FORMAT=< DRIVE | ULTRIUM9 | ULTRIUM9C | ULTRIUM8 | ULTRIUM8C >
DRIVE - The server selects the highest format that is supported by the drive on which a volume is mounted.
ULTRIUM9 - Specifies that Spectrum Protect writes data that uses the ULTRIUM9 recording format. Only Ultrium 9 media can be written to with the ULTRIUM9 format.
ULTRIUM9C - Specifies that Spectrum Protect writes data that uses the ULTRIUM9C recording format with compression. Only Ultrium 9 media can be written to with the ULTRIUM9C format.
ULTRIUM8 - Specifies that Spectrum Protect writes data that uses the ULTRIUM8 recording format. Only Ultrium 8 media can be written to with the ULTRIUM8 format.
ULTRIUM8C - Specifies that Spectrum Protect writes data that uses the ULTRIUM8C recording format with compression. Only Ultrium 8 media can be written to with the ULTRIUM8C format.

Encryption support:
Application-managed encryption is supported by IBM Spectrum Protect if it is supported by the drive. Check with your hardware vendor to determine whether this method is supported by hardware.

Supported media:
Spectrum Protect Server supports the following media for LTO-9 drives:
Ultrium 8 - 12 TB Read-Write data cartridge
Ultrium 8 - 12 TB WORM data cartridge

Ultrium 9 - 18 TB Read-Write data cartridge
Ultrium 9 - 18 TB WORM data cartridge

image 7005 Important:
1. LTO-8 drives have two media types: Ultrium 8(LTO-8)  and Ultrium M8(LTO-M8)
2. LTO-9 drives do not support read and write data to Ultrium M8(LTO-M8) media
3. LTO-9 drives only  support read and write data to Ultrium 8( LTO-8) and  Ultrium 9( LTO-9) media

Restrictions on WORM media:
Pre-labeled WORM media are not supported.
WORM media are not compatible with encryption.

Read format supported:
ULTRIUM8
ULTRIUM8C
ULTRIUM9
ULTRIUM9C

Write format supported:
ULTRIUM8
ULTRIUM8C
ULTRIUM9
ULTRIUM9C

Compatibility and mixed generation considerations:
LTO-9 drives can read and write to Ultrium 9 and 8 media, but can't read or write to Ultrium M8 and 7 media.

In a library in which mixed generation LTO's is not supportedall scratch volumes and volumes with read-write access must be readable and writable by all drives.

If all drives are LTO-9, read-write media can be Ultrium 9 and 8.

If LTO-9 drives are mixed with LTO-8 drives,  all read-write media must be Ultrium 8 only and not Ultrium M8 media. This is because  only  Ultrium 8 media can read or write to by both Ultrium 9 and 8 drives.

In a library in which mixed generation LTO's is supported, if LTO-9 drives are mixed with LTO-8 drives, the read-write media can be Ultrium generation 9, 8, and 7.  Ultrium M8(LTO-M8) media is not supported in this configuration.

Logical Block Protection:
Logical Block Protection is supported by LTO-9 drives. Consult the following document for more information on how to use Logical Block Protection, Enabling and disabling logical block protection.

Append-Only Mode:
Append-Only mode is supported by LTO-9 drives. Consult the following document for more information on how to use Append-Only mode, Enabling and disabling append-only mode.
