Error description

  • When the IBM Spectrum Protect backup-archive client
    option
    'DISKBUFFSIZE' is greater than 32 during LAN-free
    restore, the
    restore can fail. If it fails, the following
    messages are seen
    in the client error log:

     ANS2820E An
    interrupt has occurred. The current operation will
     end and the
    client will shut down.

     ANS0361I DIAG: vssess.cpp ( 512):
    sessRecvVerb(): Verb
     exceeds allowed length.

     ANS0361I DIAG:
    vssess.cpp ( 515): sessRecvVerb():
     length=XXXXX,
    verb=XX,magic=XX

     ANS1235E An unknown system error has
    occurred from which IBM
     Spectrum Protect cannot recover.

    The
    length in the ANS0361I message is a hexadecimal value
    greater
    than 0x8000 (decimal 32768 or 32 KB).

    A trace using
    TRACEFLAGS CONFIG shows that ENABLELANFREE is YES
    and
    DISKBUFFSIZE is greater than 32:

     ...
     [timestamp] :
    ..\..\common\opt\optservices.cpp(nnnn):
     SrvCanOvrRde(x)
    Src(xxxxx) diskbuffsize 256
     ...
     [timestamp] :
    ..\..\common\opt\optservices.cpp(nnnn):
     SrvCanOvrRde(x)
    Src(xxxxx) enablelanfree Yes
     ...

    There are two facets to
    this issue:

     * When ENABLELANFREE YES is specified in the
    dsm.sys file (AIX
     and Linux) or dsm.opt (Windows), then the
    default
     DISKBUFFSIZE value is 32. However, if LAN-free
    operations are
     enabled from the command line with the
    -ENABLELANFREE=YES
     parameter, then the DISKBUFFSIZE default
    value is set to 256
     in these cases:

     - Backup-Archive client
    version 8.1.10 and earlier on AIX
     - Backup-Archive client
    version 8.1.11 and later on all
     platforms

     * LAN-free
    restore operations can fail, as described above, if

    DISKBUFFSIZE is set to a value larger than 32.
     - All versions
    of the Backup-Archive client on all
     platforms

    Initial
    Impact:
    High

Local fix

  • Ensure that when ENABLELANFREE YES is in effect,
    DISKBUFFSIZE
    is set to 32. For example:

    If ENABLELANFREE YES
    is configured in the dsm.sys (AIX, Linux)
    or dsm.opt (Windows),
    then either remove the DISKBUFFSIZE
    setting or set DISKBUFFSIZE
    32.

    If -ENABLELANFREE=YES is used from the command line, then
    add
    DIKSBUFFSIZE 32 to dsm.sys (AIX and Linux) or dsm.opt
    (Windows).

    After making the appropriate change, try the
    restore again.

    You may need to create a separate server stanza
    (AIX and Linux)
    or separate dsm.opt (Windows) for LAN-free
    restores if other
    LAN-based restores use the same stanza (AIX
    and Linux) or
    dsm.opt (Windows).

Problem conclusion

  • LAN-free operations do not support a DISKBUFFSIZE value greater
    than 32. If a DISKBUFFSIZE value greater than 32 is specified
    for a LAN-free operation, then the value is ignored. The
    operation continues with the default value of 32 and the
    following new message is displayed:

      ANS1407W The value of option DiskBuffSize is ignored since
      Lan-Free is enabled.
