Troubleshooting
Problem
The introduction of a new feature in Netcool Impact FP21 (7.1.0-TIV-NCI-FP0021) adversely affects the existing property - updatefornewevents.
By default, this property is not set for any Event Readers. If this property is not set, then there is no negative impact. This document is relevant only to customers who use updatefornewevents and have upgraded to FP21.
Symptom
After applying Netcool Impact 7.1.0-TIV-NCI-FP0021, if updatefornewevents is set and updateforneweventsexpr is not set, then updatefornewevents will have no effect (i.e. the ImpactFlag field will not be updated). Instead an error will be seen in the impact server logs.
The error in the impact server log will be something like this:
WARN [JDBCVirtualStatement] Bad connection com.sybase.jdbc3.jdbc.SybSQLException: ERROR=Invalid column on line 1 of statement 'update alerts.status set ImpactReadFlag = 1 where Serial IN (...)', at or near 'ImpactReadFlag'
WARN [JDBCVirtualStatement] Bad connection com.sybase.jdbc3.jdbc.SybSQLException: ERROR=Invalid column on line 1 of statement 'update alerts.status set ImpactReadFlag = 1 where Serial IN (...)', at or near 'ImpactReadFlag'
Note: The actual event processing will work OK i.e. if the event matches the restriction filter(s) clause, then the associated policy will run OK.
Also, if both updatefornewevents and the updateforneweventsexprproperties are set, then the field specified will be updated, but it will be updated before the event is processed, as opposed to afterwards, and this could have negative consequences. There will be no error in the logs in this case. Again the actual event processing will work OK - this is not affected.
Cause
The code for a new feature in Netcool Impact FP21 (7.1.0-TIV-NCI-FP0021) for RFE http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=40578 reused the same property name as an existing property.
Resolving The Problem
APAR IJ32039 has been opened to address this issue and a fix for this will be delivered in 7.1.0-TIV-NCI-FP0022.
In the meantime, a fix is available from support, on request.
