IT35960: "NO JRE FOUND" WHEN STARTING DSM.EXE AFTER WINDOWS BACKUP-ARCHIVE CLIENT UPGRADE USING CLIENT AUTO-DEPLOYMENT

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • After upgrading the IBM Spectrum Protect Windows Backup-Archive
    client to version 8.1.x using Client Auto-Deployment the
    following error is encountered when starting dsm.exe :
    
    ""No
    JRE found. Please install JRE version 1.7.0 or above and try
    again. If JRE is already installed on your machine, then make
    sure the PATH environment variable contains path to
    javaw.exe""
    
    Although the JRE is installed and was upgraded to
    the correct version the PATH in the following Registry Key is
    not updated to the correct JRE path For example
    :
    
    [SOFTWARE\IBM\ADSM\TSM_JVM]Path=C:\Program Files\Common Files
    \Tivoli\TSM\jvm80606\
    [SOFTWARE\IBM\ADSM\TSM_JVM]version=08.00.0
    616
    
    The path above points to "C:\Program Files\Common
    Files\Tivoli\TSM\jvm80606\" however the correct path should be
    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tivoli\TSM\jvm80616\"
    

Local fix

  • There is an easy workaround for this issue, but it does involve
    updating the Windows registry The steps are:
    
    1. In Windows Explorer or Windows command prompt, traverse to
    directory:
    
       C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tivoli\TSM
    
    2. Observe the directory that has the name:
    
       jvm#####
    
       Where "#####" is a set of numbers corresponding to the
    installed JRE version
    
    3. Open the Windows registry. From a command prompt, type in
    "regedit" and press enter.
    
    4. In the Registry Editor, traverse to the following registry
    key:
    
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\ADSM\TSM_JVM
    
    5. Under this registry key, we see two values, "Path" and
    "version". We are concerned with the "Path" value
    
    6. Observe the value of "Path", it is most likely not the same
    value as the directory path we observed earlier:
    
       An example using real numbers could like
    
       Directory we looked at:
       C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tivoli\TSM\jvm80616
    
       Registry key "Path" value.
       C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tivoli\TSM\jvm80606\
    
    7. Assuming there is a difference, update registry key "Path"
    value to agree with the directory path of the JRE
    
       An example of the updated registry key "Path" value (above)
    would be:
    
       New Registry key "Path" value.
       C:\Program Files\Common Files\Tivoli\TSM\jvm80616\
    
       NOTE: Be sure to include the trailing backslash '\' as it is
    required.
    
    8. Launch the BA Client GUI, which should now pick up the JRE
    location and function as normal.

Problem conclusion

  • Backup-Archive Client function works correctly after installing
    using Backup-Archive Client auto deployment.
