Error description

  • A VM backup can fail with the following error message reported
    in the joblog:
    ERROR,timestamp,CET,2,CTGGA2403,Backup of vm VMNAME failed
    target storage volume name Property 'virtualHW.version' is not
    present in VMX file. Error: spp_volume_name
    This error occurs due to the case sensitivity of the key
    "virtualHW.version" while the .vmx file for the vm VMNAME
    contains the entry for the virtual machine hardware version as
    below:
    virtualhw.version = "x"
    Initial impact: Medium
    Versions Affected: 10.1.*

Local fix

  • 1. Power off the affected VM
    2. Locate the entry virtualhw.version = "x" in VM's .vmx file
    3. Change the above entry to:
    virtualHW.version = "x"
    4. Save and close the .vmx file
    5. Power on the VM and perform vm backup via SPP

Problem conclusion

  • A code change was made to ignore case when checking for the
    hardware version key in the VMX file. It was previously expected
    the key follow case formatting of "virtualHW.version"
