Error description

  • During streaming restore of a VMware VM, the restore job fails
due to errors reading from the NFS share mounted from the vSnap
server. The error message in the job log is "Error copying
    config files from proxy."

The VADP proxy logs for the job have these messages:

c.c.v.domain.VmdkBackupVmConfigFiles : In read file function,
file doesn't exist at location /sppvadp/<path>/<vm file name>

The system log on the vSnap server has the following message:

kernel: mount: server <vsnap address> not responding, timed out

The problem occurs when the VADP proxy used for the streaming
restore is located on the same system as the vSnap server from
which the data is restored. The VADP proxy uses an NFS mount to
read the restored data from the vSnap server. If an I/O error
occurs on the loopback NFS mount, the restore fails. The problem
is more likely to occur when the?system is low on memory.

    Affected versions: 10.1.5, 10.1.6, and 10.1.7.

Local fix

  • Increase the RAM on the combined proxy and vSnap server system
to ensure it aligns with the recommendations in the IBM Spectrum
    Protect Plus Blueprints.

    * at the discretion of IBM. *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • The proxy is changed so that instead of reading the backup data
from an NFS mount, it reads the backup data directly from the
    local vSnap server storage pool.
