Migration from an unsupported release of TWSZ to a supported release using a two-step migration job (EQQICNVS member in SEQQSAMP)

How To

Summary

Sometimes it is necessary to migrate from a very old release of TWSZ - for example, from a release older than 8.5.1 to the 9.3 release, or from a release older than 9.1 to the 9.5 or 10.1 release. This type of migration cannot be done in a single step execution of the EQQICNVS member of SEQQSAMP (PGM=EQQICTOP)

Objective

| Migrate from a very old release to a newer one via a two-step or three-step EQQICNVS job
Changes made April 4, 2023 are marked with a vertical bar "|" in the left margin.

Steps

Two sample JCL jobs are provided.  The first "TWOSTAGE_0.txt" does a migration from 8.3 to 8.6 in the first step, and a migration from 8.6 to 9.3 in the second step.  The 8.6 controller does NOT need to be started, but it is necessary to have the SEQQLMD0 library from the 8.6 release as the EQQICTOP load module is needed.   The second sample "TWOSTREV.txt"  does a REVERSE migration - from 9.3 to 8.6 in
the first step and from 8.6 to 8.3 in the second step.  Other releases could be handled with similar JCL.
| Note:  Direct one-step migration can be done from 9.3 or 9.5 to 10.1, but for 9.2 and earlier, it takes a two-step migration to get to 10.1.
|  This means for migrations from very old releases to 10.1, a three-step migration will be needed, so the provided two-step migration JCL
|  would need to be revised to add a third step.   An example of a three-step migration would be from 8.3  to 8.6 to 9.3 and then to 10.1.
