How to determine the firmware upgrade history of an IBM Security Access Manager / IBM Security Verify Access appliance?

Question & Answer

Question

How can the firmware history (upgrade path) of the appliance be identified?

Answer

Check the firmware details via either the appliance LMI or CLI:
  • In the LMI, navigate to: Manage System Settings -> Updates and Licensing -> Firmware Settings
  • In the CLI, use the command: firmware list
The output in both cases will show the firmware version installed on the active and inactive partitions.
If the appliance was upgraded, (for example, via a firmware '.pkg' file) the output shows:
Installation Type: XPU
If the appliance was installed as a fresh build, (for example, via a firmware '.iso' file) the output shows:
Installation Type: ISO
In the event that neither partition shows Installation Type: ISO due to several firmware upgrades over the lifetime of the appliance,  navigate LMI to: Manage System Settings -> Updates and Licensing -> Update History.   Look for the Firmware entry with the oldest Release Date as that should reflect the version of firmware used when the appliance was initially installed.
Alternatively, the full update history can also be found through analysis of a Support File collected from the appliance.
A Support File can be created through LMI by navigating to: Manage System Settings -> System Settings -> Support Files.
Once created, download the Support File to your workstation and unzip it like you would for any compressed '.zip' filetype.
Open the file:  /etc/lum/update-history.yaml which contains the firmware version install history (and also X-Force Content install history).  The most recent install activity is listed first and for firmware history look for entries containing "name: Firmware".  Look for the last (oldest) entry in the file to identify which firmware version was used on initial install of the appliance.   For example, if the file contains:
entry_tag2:
  name: Firmware
  version: !str 9.0.6.0
  event_type: Install
  date: 2019-01-14 15:58:34
  success: 1
  log_file:
  readme:
entry_tag4:
  name: Firmware
  version: !str 9.0.4.0
  event_type: Install
  date: 2018-06-12 14:24:09
  success: 1
  log_file:
  readme:
The appliance was initially installed from an ISO (or equivalent) containing 9.0.4.0 firmware version.
