Error description

  • During an upgrade to IBM Business Automation Workflow, the
DBUpgrade command fails because the DBUpgrade JVM doesn't
connect to the database that is configured to support only
    TLSv1.2 protocol connections.

The following errors are written to the DBUpgrade log:

    [Sep 13, 2020 11:42:12 AM] 00000001 FINE:
    com.lombardisoftware.tools.dbupgrade.UpgradeDatabase.main -
java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not connect to your Process
Server database.Check the cause of the exception for more
    information.
Make sure the database server is connected and the JDBC driver
files are in your JDBC driver path, which is specified in the
    deployment environment (DE) properties file.
    ...
    Caused by:
    com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The driver
could not establish a secure connection to SQL Server by using
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. Error: "SQL Server did
not return a response. The connection has been closed.

Local fix

  • Add the following setting to the
    ${BAW_INSTALL_ROOT}/util/dbUpgrade/upgrade.properties file:

    com.ibm.jsse2.overrideDefaultTLS=true

Problem summary

  • This error occurs because the DBUpgrade JVM uses the default
TLSv1 protocol to connect to the database.

Problem conclusion

  • A fix is available or will be available that ensures the
DBUpgrade command connects to the database by using only the
    TLS1.2 protocol.
