APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Message SSL0401E during 'apachectl stop'

Local fix

  • allow 12 seconds for the stop to complete, or run a
    graceful-stop with a long GracefulShutdownTimeout which will
    stop new connections, then follow it up with a normal
    non-graceful "stop" to forcibly kill any requests still running
    after 10 more seconds.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Confusing non-graceful shutdown         *
    * messages, confusing SSL error messages *
    *                      at shutdown on IHS 9.0 on z/SO.         *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    With IHS 9.0 on z/OS, during non-graceful shutdown some
    connections will end with SSL error messages referring to
    "bad file descriptor" or "invalid state".
    These will appear to end briefly before shutdown.
    On IHS 8.5.5 and 9.0 on all platforms other than Windows,
    the 'caught SIGTERM' message can be issued many seconds
    after shutdown begins.

Problem conclusion

  • The 'caught SIGTERM' message was update to be emitted when
    shutdown begins, not midway through.

    Shutdown on z/OS in 9.0 was updated to avoid "bad file
    descriptor" or "invalid state", but non-graceful shutdown of
    existing connections will now consistently report 'broken
    pipe' errors.

    The fix for this APAR is targeted for inclusion in IBM HTTP
    Server fix packs 8.5.5.19 and 9.0.5.6. For more information,
