Abstract
IBM recognizes that customers might want to run WebSphere Community Edition on a broad set of configurations (for example: platforms, related products, or frameworks). To help customers understand the IBM support available for their planned configuration, IBM is introducing the “Recommended”, “Compatible” and “Not Supported” configuration classifications. These configuration classifications are intended to be used by customers who need to run on platforms that might not be tested with WebSphere Application Server Community Edition or who would like to use related products or frameworks that might have been tested by partners of IBM

In the following table, the Support Policy outlines how IBM intends to work with customers who have purchased IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition.
Type of configuration | Description | Support policy |
Recommended configuration | IBM recommends that customers use these operating system levels and processor architectures, since IBM tests WebSphere Application Server Community Edition with these platforms. | IBM provides support for this configuration for customers who have an IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition support contract and are entitled to support, defect fixes or a reasonable alternative to address a reported problem with using WebSphere Application Server Community Edition on these platforms |
Compatible configuration | IBM makes no formal claim of how well these platforms will actually perform and therefore is not able to include them as Recommended Configurations at this point in time Customers might want to run WebSphere Application Server Community Edition on a platform that they are more familiar with but is not on the Recommended Configuration category. IBM expects that WebSphere Application Server Community Edition should function reliably on a given platform if:
| For customers that have an active IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition support contract, IBM will work with the customer, IBM Business Partners and the Apache Geronimo community in a commercially reasonable manner to help solve the customer problem or determine that the problem source is outside of WebSphere Application Server Community Edition. Customers might be directed to our Business Partners for support on their specific offerings. IBM might, at our discretion, defer support to a more current release of WebSphere Application Server Community Edition or choose to reclassify the configuration as "Not Supported" |
Not supported configuration | IBM is aware that these platforms have not been tested and are not supported with WebSphere Application Server Community Edition | Not supported. Customers should use a Recommended or Compatible Configuration to receive support under an active IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition contract. |

Disk: 256 MB to hold the server's installation files, initial configuration, and log files (not including JDK)
Memory: 512 MB RAM (1024 MB or more preferred and depends on deployed applications)

Notes |
- Supported for application design, development, and testing; no support for production use.
- WebSphere Application Server Community Edition, running under a recommended IBM SDK on a recommended operating system cannot distinguish between x86_32 and x86_64 architecture. WebSphere Application Server Community Edition does not impose additional hardware restrictions beyond those imposed by the IBM SDK or operating system.
- We recommend running WebSphere Application Server Community Edition under the default shell for this OS (/bin/sh).
- Supported for application design, development, and testing; used by the server at runtime; no support for production use with customer applications.
- System z support is only available as part of the Open Source Consolidation Package.
- Java SDK is required when using the Eclipse plug-in or using Java debug options.
- Locked-down security policies may not work correctly.
- v2.2.24 is included in Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise Server
- Ubuntu 10.04 comes with libstdc++6 installed. WebSphere Community Edition v3.0 requires libstdc++5.
