Abstract
With Copy Services Manager (CSM), planned or unplanned HyperSwap may fail in a Cascaded Metro Global Mirror (MGM) environment
Content
Risk classification
HIPER
Risk categories
HyperSwap failure and possible System Outage
Affected Domain
For z/OS Customers with Copy Services Manager managing Cascaded Metro Global Mirror with HyperSwap on the following DS8000 Microcode levels:
DS8870: R7.5 SP13 - 87.52.44.0
DS8880: R8.5 SP5.0 - 88.55.9.0 or R8.5 SP5.1 - 88.55.9.1
DS8900F: R9.0 GA to R9.0 SP2.2 - 89.0.214.0 to 89.2.40.1
Description
A DS8000 microcode problem exists and affects z/OS environments where CSM is managing MGM.
When a HyperSwap (planned or unplanned) is initiated this will result in the HyperSwap failing, possibly leading to a loss of access and systems outage.
Mitigation
For DS8870:
Install IOS APAR OA60012
For DS8880:
Install IOS APAR OA60012
For DS8900F:
Install IOS APAR OA60012, AND: For z/OS CSM installations install CSM APAR PH28077 on z/OS LPARs. Or, for Distributed CSM installations upgrade to fix pack 6.2.9.1.
Until the IOS APAR OA60012 is available on the IBM Fix Central site, open up a support case with the IOS support team and request the PTFs for the APAR.
Fix
To prevent impact during a planned or unplanned HyperSwap before or during code load, ensure that the steps outlined above in the Mitigation section are performed FIRST.
For DS8870:
Install R7.5 SP13.1 - 87.52.45.0
For DS8880:
Install R8.5 SP5.2 - 88.55.9.2 or R8.5 SP6 - 88.56.9.0
For DS8900F:
Install R9.0 SP3 - 89.3.6.0,
AND:
For z/OS CSM installations install CSM APAR PH28077 on z/OS LPARs.
OR:
For Distributed CSM installations upgrade to fix pack 6.2.9.1.
Recommendation
IBM recommends refraining from performing any planned HyperSwap activities for machines in a Cascaded MGM environment in the affected domain until applying either the mitigation or fix.
