APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • SQL failover cluster Test mode restore may fail with the error:

"Failed to restore database. Error: Writer [SqlServerWriter]
reported error status([VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_PRE_RESTORE] [13]) error
message [(0x00000000 000001BBEF9227F0)]"

The error is encountered for the 2 configurations:
1. A failed cluster resource in "Available Storage" group
2. The owner node of "Available Storage" group is different than
the destination SQL instance owner.

Local fix

  • Manually cleanup the cluster resource in "Available Storage"
group and retry the restore job..

Problem conclusion

  • Made changes to ignore cluster resources in failed state if they
were not created by SPP

Temporary fix

  • Manually cleanup the failed cluster resource in "Available
Storage" and try the restore again.
