Undetected data corruption of data in a RAID 1 or 10 array

Abstract

Under a rare and complicated set of conditions, a RAID 1 or RAID 10 array may drop a write, causing undetected data corruption.

Content

The following conditions are required to expose this issue:
  1. A drive is detected as running slower than the rest of the drives in the R1 or R10 array
  2. Cache is disabled
  3. The drive uses a 4k block size
  4. There are multiple overwrites to the same block
If these unlikely conditions all happen at the same time, then the system may silently drop a write command, causing an undetected data corruption.

This issue is present on all supported code levels.
 
Mitigation or Fix
This issue has been resolved by APAR HU02237 in 8.2.1.11 and 8.3.1.2.
