Undetected Data Corruption of Incremental FlashCopies where the FlashCopy source is a Metro or Global Mirror Target Volume or a Hyperswap Volume.

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

If the source volume of an incremental FlashCopy map is also a Metro or Global Mirror target volume that is using a change volume or is a Hyperswap volume, then there is a possibility that not all data is copied to the FlashCopy target.

Content

This issue affects both Global Mirror with Change Volumes, as well as Metro or Global Mirror with consistency protection.

If an incremental FlashCopy is started while the change volume is actively copying, then there is a chance that not all data will be copied to the FlashCopy target volume.  This causes an undetected data corruption to the FlashCopy target volume.

The requirement that the change volume is actively copying when starting the flashcopy means that systems using Metro or Global Mirror with consistency protection or Hyperswap are much less likely to be affected, as the change volume will only be actively copying when resynchronising after being stopped.

This issue is present on all supported code levels.

Mitigation or Fix

This issue has been resolved by APARs HU02222  and HU02205 in 8.2.1.11 and 8.3.1.0 and higher.  This issue only exists in the Metro or Global Mirror secondary cluster, therefore  it is not necessary to upgrade the primary cluster to prevent reoccurrence.

After installing the fix, customers are advised to delete and recreate any incremental FlashCopy maps to force a full copy.
