Error description

  • During the installation of the Spectrum Protect 8.1.10 Linux
    Backup/Archive Client a directory named "/etc/systemd/system"
is being created even for a Linux Operating Systems (OS) which
do not use systemd. The "/etc/systemd/system" creation may
interfere with the user environment as it is often used to
check whether the system runs systemd initialization or
    not.

Spectrum Protect Versions Affected: 8.1.10 client on all
                                        Linux OS not using systemd

    | MDVREGR 8.1.10-TIV_5698MCL |

    Initial Impact: Low

    Additional Keywords: TS003838101 tsm
    x64 init rhel6

Local fix

  • On Linux OS where systemd is not used, delete the unneeded
directory created by the client installation =>

     "/etc/systemd/system"

Problem conclusion

  • Systemd service file for client acceptor daemon was created
    unconditionally during the product installation.
On Linux distributions not supporting systemd initialization it
lead to /etc/systemd/system folder creation, which is
undesirable, as some user scripts may use this location as a
    systemd-based distribution indicator.
The file creation is now conditional and only happens if the
    target folder already exists.
