Error description

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.8 and 8.2 introduced changes that
render these operating systems incompatible with the IBM
Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client journal-based backup
kernel extension. Therefore, journal-based backup cannot be used
with these versions of Red Hat Linux. When the the kernel
extension attemps to load, the following error displayed in the
    terminal:
insmod: ERROR: could not insert module filepath.ko: Operation
    not permitted
ERROR: Failed to start filepath with error 1

    Affected versions:
Backup-archive client v8.1 JBB kernel extension on RHEL 7.8 and
    RHEL 8.2
Backup-archive client v7.1 JBB kernel extension on RHEL 7.8

Problem conclusion

  • The mount structure changed in the Red Hat kernel. Our filepath
kernel extension was updated to handle that change while still
maintaining backwards compatibility. With this fix, the kernel
    extension loads successfully.

Temporary fix
