ibmvnic driver fails to boot during fadump or kdump due to insufficient kernel dump memory

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

During execution of a Firmware Assisted dump (fadump) or kernel dump (kdump), it is observed in some cases that the memory that is allocated for the kernel dump is not sufficient to support the memory requirements of the virtual Network Interface Card (vNIC). As a result, the driver might fail to boot and any attempts to transfer a core dump to a different system over the network fails.

IBM Systems Affected
All IBM® Power Systems
Symptoms
The driver might fail to boot and any attempts to transfer a core dump over the network fails.

Workaround
Use a different network adapter to transfer the core dump or save the core dump locally to the disk.

Fix Outlook
IBM is working with Red Hat and SUSE to release a fix for this issue. The fix would come as part of a future Red Hat and SUSE maintenance release. Open a support ticket with Red Hat or SUSE if a hotfix is needed before the next corresponding Red Hat or SUSE maintenance release.
