Error description

  • After upgrading the IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual
Environments - Data Protection for Hyper-V application to
8.1.6.x or higher, starting the user interface will initiate the
configuration wizard. This is incorrect behavior for an
existing configuration. This behavior will happen every time
the user interface is started, even after going through the
wizard. This behavior of running the wizard multiple times
results in additional configurations which are unnecessary.

To diagnose this issue, review of the messages.log will show the
following during the user interface initiation:

Determined that the configuration wizard must be run, launching
    wizard

The configuration error exception happens when the Web Server
tries to validate the datamover option file that is used by the
Client Acceptor Daemon (CAD) service, and the option file
contains a string of unexpected characters; for example, either
    "*=============================" or "***********"

    Affected versions:

IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments - Data Protection
for Hyper-V 8.1 on all supported Microsoft Windows platforms.
    MDVREGR |8.1.6.0-TIV_5725TVEHV

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: TS002562293 tsm tdp MMC launch

Local fix

  • Review the contents of the datamover option files. Look for
strings of characters which would be unexpected, such as noted
in the problem description. Remove the string of unexpected
characters from the option file and restart the services.

Problem conclusion

  • Data Protection for Hyper-V failed to process option file that
contains one-word comment or option without value. The
corresponding subroutine has been modified to correctly handle
the mentioned lines in the option file.
