PI58394: S878 USING VSAM EXTERNAL FILES WITH MIX OF COBOL V4 AND V5

Error description

• Abends878 s878 may occur when using a mix of Enterprise COBOL
  V5 and Enterprise COBOL V4 with External files.
  

Local fix

• Don't mix COBOL V4 and V5
  

Problem summary

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ABEND S878 (out of below the line       *
  *                      memory) happens, with TRACEBACK table   *
  *                      containing IGZIFCB follow by EFSYNC,    *
  *                      follows by getstg2.The logic to reuse   *
  *                      memory for handling of the mixed COBOL  *
  *                      V5 and pre V5, EXTERNAL VSAM file is    *
  *                      incorrect, for each time a program      *
  *                      with the above characteristic to        *
  *                      start, or OPEN/CLOSE a VSAM file, a 58  *
  *                      bytes chuck of below the line memory    *
  *                      is allocated.                           *

  * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF.                      *

  In the mixed environment, it fails to reuse storage in the code
  that handle mixed COBOL V5 and pre V5, EXTERNAL VSAM file.
  

Problem conclusion

• The logic to reuse memory has been corrected.
