Error description
With Enterprise COBOL V5, the Working Storage section of a COBOL program is now included into the Writable Static Area (WSA). When linking several programs together, the size of the WSA can become very large. This may result in very high overhead during initialization.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V5 compiler who * * compile with DATA(31) and DLL compiler * * options, and who have applied APAR PI45771 * * and want the runtime support to complete the * * performance improvement. * * * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Performance: Enterprise COBOL V5 * * programs may have performance * * degradation when using the DATA(31) and * * DLL compiler options where the programs * * call out to other COBOL programs that * * are linked together in a large DLL * * (Dynamic Link Library). This PTF is to * * enable the fix in compiler APAR * * PI45771. This PTF has no effect without * * applying PI45771, and this PTF can be * * applied before PI45771. * * * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Apply provided service. * **************************************************************** In Enterprise COBOL V5, when DATA(31) is in effect, data items in WORKING-STORAGE are stored in an area called the 'writable static area' (WSA). This area is unnecessarily initialized to zero when the COBOL program is in a DLL. This initialization overhead may become significant when there is a very large number of Enterprise COBOL V5 programs linked in the DLL. This problem does not occur for non-DLL.
Problem conclusion
Enterprise COBOL runtime library code is put in place to support the fix in PI45771. FIXCAT keyword: COB0501T/K COB0502T/K
