Adding more processors to a running Linux LPAR might cause the partition to fail

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

When you add more processors to a running Linux logical partition (LPAR), the partition might fail.

Content

Linux® releases affected: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1, or later.
IBM systems affected: All IBM POWER8®, and later systems that are based on PowerVM®.
Symptoms

The kernel crashes in the destroy_sched_domain() function.
Workaround

Do not add more processors to the LPAR when the LPAR is running. Shut down the partition to add more processors.
Fix Outlook
IBM is working with Red Hat to release a fix for this issue. The fix would come as part of a future Red Hat maintenance release. If a hot fix is needed before the next Red Hat maintenance release, open a support ticket with Red Hat.
