Possible partition crash during a spurious device operation

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

If a scheduled spurious device operation during the removal of a dynamic Logical Partitioning (DLPAR) device is executed erroneously, it might cause a partition to crash or to hang.

Content

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12, Service Pack 5
IBM systems affected
  • IBM Power System S922(9009-22A)

  • IBM Power System H924 (9223-42H)
  • IBM Power System L922 (9008-22L)
  • IBM Power System E950 (9040-MR9)
  • IBM Power System E980 (9080-M9S)
Symptoms

During the removal of a dynamic Logical Partitioning (DLPAR) device, hot unplugging, or driver unbinding of a virtual NIC (VNIC) device, a spurious device operation that is scheduled during removal might be executed erroneously, resulting in a partition to crash or to hang.
Workaround

Closing or deactivating the VNIC interface by using a tool such as ip or ifconfig before unplugging or unbinding might reduce the chances of seeing this symptom.
Fix Outlook

IBM is working with SUSE and Red Hat to release a fix for this issue. The fix would come as part of a future SUSE or Red Hat maintenance release. Open a support ticket with SUSE or Red Hat if a test fix is needed before the next SUSE or Red Hat maintenance release.

See SUSE bug number 1149652.
See Red Hat bug number 1749873.
