How does the backup feature work on Cloud Pak System?
Answer
System backup uses a delta backup mechanism to reduce the backup time of data.
The first backup that is taken is called a baseline backup. It can contain lots of data. The plan for the baseline backup can take hours to complete. It all depends on the file transfer speed.
Subsequent backups (that is, delta backups) contain only the differences with the baseline backup.
Overtime, backups can get bigger in size since backups capture differences with the baseline backup. When that happens, create a new backup location. The first backup that is taken with the new backup location is a baseline backup. The old backup location can be archived.
After Cloud Pak System is upgraded to a new release level, the first backup that is taken is a baseline backup.
Component backup exports selected component data.
The first component backup can take a while. It all depends on which components you selected to back up. The subsequent backups back up only those components that were changed.
