FLASH: Upgrade IBM Performance Management (APM) Agent Core Framework on Windows

Abstract

Recommendation to upgrade the Core Framework version of Monitoring Agents for IBM Cloud Performance Management (APM) on Windows platform to the latest available Core Framework Interim Fix.

IBM Cloud APM agents on Windows systems might resend the same data over and over again to the Cloud APM server and cause the APM server's file system and WAREHOUS database to grow.  The problem begins if the agents cannot send data to the Cloud APM server because of network connectivity issues or the Cloud APM server is stopped for an outage.
To determine whether your Windows monitoring agents are using an IBM Cloud APM Core Famework version that causes the problem, perform the following steps:
1.  Log in to your Cloud APM server as root
2.  curl http://localhost/1.0/monitoring/agent/inventory -H "Accept: text/plain"  -o  /tmp/agent-inventory.log > /dev/null 2>&1
3.  grep -e "C=06.40.00.04" -e "C=06.40.00.05" -e "C=06.40.00.06" -e "C=06.40.00.07" -e "C=06.40.00.08" /tmp/agent-inventory.log | grep WIX > /tmp/windows-agents-to-update.log

The /tmp/windows-agent-to-update.log lists the monitoring agents that need to be updated.  If the file is empty, then no agents need to be updated.  If the file is not empty, the hostname property on each line indicates the hostname of a system that needs to be updated.  If multiple agents are installed on the same Windows system, the same hostname appears multiple times in the file. Since agents installed in the same installation directory use the same Core Framework, you need to update the Core Framework once for each hostname.
The fix for the problem is included in IBM Cloud APM 8.1.4.0 core framework interim fix 12 or later interim fix.  You can find the Cloud APM 8.1.4.0 core framework interim fixes by searching Fix Central for:
       8.1.4.0-IBM-APM-CORE-FRAMEWORK-IF
Launch the Fix Readme by selecting "More Information" and follow the instructions in the readme to upgrade the agents that need to be updated.
