Why is APM agent installation failing with KINWIINS.ver file incorrect message?

Question & Answer

Question

Installation aborts using installation agent on windows, only one machine is failing. There seem to be some "leftover" install information from something previous on the machine.
Other than run smai-agent.bat uninstall_all and remove any leftover directories what else can I do?

 C:\IBM\APM\InstallITM\Abort*.log
Installed KINWIINS.ver file incorrect, cannot continue.
 SEVERE: ERROR - Install aborted.
 RollbackClearData entry
 RollbackClearData FAIL: Directory
 C:\IBM\APM\RollbackData failed to clear

RollbackClearData SEVERE: Delete the above directory before the
directory before the next install, or rollback may back level files or directories.

RegistrySetRoot Key(Software\Candle\OMEGAMON) invalid HKEY value, cannot process.
Media source Directory initially set to:
 C:\temp\APM_AD~1.0\APMADV~1.0\apm\inst\os-agent
Media source Directory does not contain Component files

Answer

The KINWIINS.ver is laid down when an agent is installed. So you are correct, there is something left over from a previous install.

There are three different options-

  • Use a different directory to install agents (like ..\IBM\APM2)

  • Search and remove the entries of "C:\IBM\APM" under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBMMonitoring and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\IBMMonitoring first, then you can install the agent in the same directory.

  • Reimage the machine and start over
