How to handle the IBM Content Navigator's Edit Service client SSL certificate expiration

How To

Summary

IBM Content Navigator Edit Service client contains an SSL certificate that expires on 23 December 2024. A new certificate is available that expires on March 4, 2025.

The updated certificate is available at the following link: https://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/selectFixes?parent=Enterprise%20Content%20Management&product=ibm/Other+software/Content+Navigator&release=3.0.13&platform=Windows&function=fixId&fixids=NES-SSLCERT-WIN&includeSupersedes=0

Objective

Upgrade the SSL certificate used by the IBM Content Navigator Edit Service client.

Steps

To install a new certificate, there are three options.

Note

As of January 2023, on Windows desktops, option 3 is the preferred method for updating the Edit Service client certificate

Option 1:

  1. Refer to the Fix Pack Compatibility Matrix to determine whether the new version of the Edit Service client is compatible with the current version of IBM Content Navigator in use at your site. The matrix can be downloaded from here:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/filenet-p8-fix-pack-compatibility-matrices

If you are not running a suitably current version of IBM Content Navigator, use Option 2 to update the Edit Service client certificate on your users' work stations.

  2. Distribute the new Edit Service client to users.
  3. Instruct the users to uninstall the existing Edit Service client from their desktops, and then install the new version of the Edit Service client.
  4. Update the Edit Service client installation packages in the deployed IBM Content Navigator path so that new users automatically install the version of Edit Service client with the updated certificate when they use the Edit function for the first time.

Option 2:

  1. Upgrade the IBM Content Navigator Server to the latest version.
Instruct the users to uninstall the existing Edit Service client from their desktops.
  2. The next time the users use the Edit function in their IBM Content Navigator desktop, they will be prompted to install the new Edit Service client.

Option 3 (For Windows Desktops Only):

Use the following procedure to update an existing Windows Edit Service client installation with the SSL certificate that can be downloaded from Fix Central:
  1. Download the edit.dat file from the following location on Fix Central: The updated certificate is available now at the following link: https://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/selectFixes?parent=Enterprise%20Content%20Management&product=ibm/Other+software/Content+Navigator&release=3.0.13&platform=Windows&function=fixId&fixids=NES-SSLCERT-WIN&includeSupersedes=0
  2. Replace the edit.dat file in the Edit Service client installations on other workstations with the file downloaded in Step 1. By default, the edit.dat file is in the following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\IBM Content Navigator Edit\EditClient\
  3. Restart the Edit Service clients.
